Mediterranean Terrace

Olive, euphorbia and oak sleepers

Sleeper-built terraces planted for hot, dry conditions and winter structure.

Mediterranean Terrace in Norfolk

A sunny, sloping frontage to a flint and brick barn, crying out for terracing that felt part of the building rather than bolted on.

Reclaimed oak sleepers step the ground down in wide, shallow layers, creating deep raised beds with warm, free-draining soil.

The planting is properly Mediterranean: olive trees, acid-green euphorbia, perovskia, lavender, santolina and grasses. It looks its best in strong sunshine and still holds its shape right through the winter.
