A row of pleached hornbeam lifts the eye and adds a second storey of green above the wall, giving privacy and dappled shade without stealing the floor space.
Underneath, the planting leans into the conditions: acanthus, hostas, box, ferns and shade-tolerant perennials in a restrained green and white palette, with pots of pelargoniums for a lift of colour.
